Therapeutic Description: Cephalosporins
Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans.
Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined.
Precautions: Penicillin hypersensitivity, renal impairment.
Infections of respiratory and gastro-intestinal tracts and of skin and soft tissues, bones and joints. Septicaemia, endocarditis. Prophylaxis in surgery. UTI.
ORAL: Adults: 1-2 gm daily in 2 or 4 divided doses; max 4 gm daily. Children: 25-50 mg/kg daily in 2 or 4 divided doses. Continue in all cases for 48-72 hours after patient is asymptomatic.
Lower Respiratory Infection: Pneumonia: Adults: 500 mg every 6 hours or 1 gm every 12 hours. Children: > 9 months: 25-50 mg/kg/day given every 6 hours or every 12 hours (up to adult dose).
Otitis Media: Children: > 9 months: 75-100 mg/kg/day given every 6 hours or every 12 hours. Max: 4 gm/day.
Upper Respiratory Infection: Tonsillitis/Pharyng
IM: Reconstitute with sterile water for injection 2 mL in 500 mg and 4 mL in 1 gm vial. The preparation is single use only.
IV infusion: Reconstitute with sterile water for injection 5 mL in 500 mg vial shake to make solution. Transfer the entire contents to the IV infusion diluent. Protect from light.
Compatibility: Dextrose 5% or 10 %, NaCl 0.9%.
Stability: 2 hours at room temperature and 12 hours when stored in refrigerator.
Probenecid, anticoagulants, aminoglycosides.
Hypersensitivity reactions. GI upset, pseudomembranous colitis.
