Therapeutic Description: Cephalosporins
Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans.
Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended.
Precautions: Penicillin hypersensitivity. Renal impairment (CrCl<20 mL/min). Suspension may contain aspartame; caution in phenylketonuria.
Respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue infections; serious infections pending bacteriology. Meningitis. Prophylaxis against infection in surgical procedures. UTI and gonorrhoea.
ORAL: Adults: Most infections and bronchitis, usually 250 mg twice daily.
Severe infections and pneumonia: 500 mg twice daily.
Gonorrhoea: 1 gm as a single dose. Children: 3 -6 months (4-6 kg body wt): 40-60 mg; 6 months-2 years, 60-120 mg; 2-12 years: 125 mg. All twice daily.
Lower Respiratory Infection: Adults & Children: >13 years: 250-500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days.
Upper Respiratory Infection: Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis/ Sinusitis: Adults: 250 mg every 12 hours for 10 days. Children: >13 years: 250 mg every 12 hours for 10 days. 3 months-12 years.
Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 125 mg every 12 hours for 10 days or 10 mg/kg every 12 hours for 10 days. Max: 500 mg/day. 3 months-12 years.
Sinusitis: 250 mg every 12 hours for 10
IM: Inject deep IM into large muscle mass. IV: Inject direct IV over 3-5 min. Infuse intermittent infusion over 15-30 min.
Compatibility: Stable in D5¼NS, D5½NS, D5NS, D5W, D10W, LR, NS.
Loop diuretics, aminoglycosides. Probenecid, combined oral contraceptives.
Hypersensitivity reactions, Gl disturbances. Rarely pain at inj site, candidiasis, eosinophilia, neutropenia, leucopenia, transient rise in liver enzymes, blood urea. Positive Coomb's test.
